Great LA Women Artists, Part One: Judy Baca
My deep dive into Judy Baca, a renowned artist from LA, includes a visit to her masterpiece, the Great Wall of Los Angeles, and news about new murals that will be created at LACMA starting this month.
I’m embarking on a series about women artists who have practiced in Los Angeles and have had significant impact on our culture. First up is Judy Baca, a Chicana artist who has been creating public art for over four decades. At 77, her considerable career is now receiving long overdue attention. Born in Watts, Baca is a muralist and community activist who is Professor Emeritus at UCLA, a recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, the 2021 Medal of the Arts, and a United States Artist Rockefeller Fellowship. She is being celebrated by LA’s art institutions and has received a grant to extend The Great Wall of Los Angeles up to the present day. Read on to be in the know about a woman who has been called “one of our great feminist artists.” **
