Thrifting Thrills at the Santa Monica Flea Market
Meandering around the manageably small flea market at the Santa Monica airport provides a relaxing Sunday morning date with friends. Two other local fleas take place this weekend. Happy hunting!
A quick weekend note: Two exhibits of note are closing this Sunday. The first is LACMA’s marvelous Afro-Atlantic Histories show, and you can catch a gallery tour on Saturday at 2 pm for a more in-depth exploration. LA Louver’s The Flower Show also ends Sunday, which is nice to pair with a walk along the beach.
I had a fun throwback experience in August. Do you remember going to flea markets? Something we did years ago before our houses filled up with kids and a lot of stuff?Inspired by a friend moving into a new place, I decided to drop in on the Santa Monica Airport Antique Market and called two friends who enjoy the thrill of the hunt as much as I do; they both said yes immediately, so with marked excitement we gathered at 8 am, coffee in hand, and smiles on our faces. We’d forgotten how relaxing it is to meander in the cool part of the day, without an agenda or the pressure to buy anything, enjoying each other and the vendors who traveled from afar to share their wares. We found a lovely antique painted tray, beautiful vintage clothing and jewelry, healthy plants, and some gorgeous old paintings. I may go again at the end of September just for the fun of it and highly recommend that you try it again (or for the first time). Treasure awaits!
